Gulf Giants sink Dubai Capitals in low-scoring encounter

DUBAI: A combined bowling effort scripted Gulf Giants’ sensational 19-run victory over home side Dubai Capitals in the 24th match of the ILT20 here on Tuesday.

Put into bat first, the Giants could post a modest total of 126/9 on the board in the allotted 20 overs.

The Giants had a dismal start to their innings as they were 17/4 in 3.4 overs.

Following the slump, in-form batter Shimron Hetmyer joined captain James Vince in the middle and launched a recovery.

The duo added gutsy 51 runs for the fifth wicket before Vince perished in the 11th over.

He scored 32 off 28 deliveries with the help of four boundaries.

Aayan Afzal Khan partnered briefly with mainstay Hetmyer after Vince’s dismissal. Their stand yielded 23 runs.

However, their back-to-back dismissals left the Giants reeling at 92/7 in 15.2 overs.

Hetmyer remained the top-scorer for the Giants with a 28-ball 34, featuring four boundaries.

Later, Dominik Drakes’ brisk cameo bolstered the Giants’ total. He smashed one boundary and three sixes amid his 12-ball 24.

Olly Stone led the bowling attack for the Capitals with 4/14, followed by Scott Kuggeleijn, who bagged three.

Chasing a modest 126-run total, the Capitals’ batting lineup folded on a measly 107 despite Dasun Shanaka’s unbeaten 24.

The right-handed batter walked out to bat at number seven when the Capitals needed an achievable equation of 55 required off as many deliveries.

But Shanaka kept losing partners at the other end and eventually got stranded at the striker’s end when Haider Ali perished, courtesy of a running mishap.

Besides Shanaka, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (15) and Ben Dunk (13) were the other notable contributors to the Capitals’ response.

For the Giants, Aayan Afzal Khan claimed two wickets while Zuhaib Zubair, Chris Jordan, Jamie Overton, Gerhard Erasmus and Blessing Muzarabani struck out a batter each.

The 19-run victory lifted Gulf Giants to the third in the ILT20 standings with eight points in as many matches while Dubai Capitals remained in fifth with six points.
