Miller, Van Buuren aid Paarl Royals to edge Pretoria Capitals

CENTURION: David Miller and Mitchell Van Buuren scored blistering half-centuries to power Paarl Royals to a thrilling ten-run victory over Pretoria Capitals in the sixth SA20 match at SuperSport Park on Sunday.

Royals registered their second victory in the ongoing season of SA20, while the Capitals sunk to the bottom with losses in both games.

Capitals after opting to field drew first blood with the wicket of Jason Roy in the second over, however, Jos Buttler and Wihan Lubbe raised a solid second-wicket stand to get their team out of the trouble.

Their 44-run partnership was dominated by Buttler, who scored 32 runs while Lubbe added 12 before James Neesham sent him packing.

Adil Rashid then removed Buttler, who scored 39 runs from 23 balls, including five boundaries and one six.

Royal’s skipper David Miller was joined by Mitchell Van Buuren with 69 runs on the board in the ninth over and the duo soon turned the game on its head with belligerent hitting.

They added an unbeaten 141 runs from 72 balls to propel their side to a mammoth 210 runs in their allocated 20 overs.

Miller top-scored with 75 off 42, featuring eight boundaries and three sixes, while Van Buuren played a brisk 40-ball knock of 72 runs with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes.

Daryn Dupavillon, Neesham and Rashid picked one wicket each for the Capitals.

While chasing the mammoth target, the Capitals lost two wickets in the first over of Lungi Ngidi with four runs on the board.

Opening batter Will Jacks and Rilee Rossouw then counter-attacked with a 147-run stand from 77 balls to push the team’s total to 151 before Ngidi removed the latter in the 14th over.

Rossouw top-scored for his side with 82 runs from 45 balls courtesy of ten boundaries and four sixes.

Bjorn Fortuin castled Jacks in the next over, reducing the Capitals to 153-4 inside 15 overs.

Jacks returned to the pavilion after scoring 58 off 34, which featured six boundaries and three sixes.

Skipper Neesham then played a nine-ball cameo, scoring 20 runs with four boundaries before skiing Andile Phehlukwayo’s delivery which landed safely in Fabien Allen’s hands.

The Capitals lost track of their chase, ultimately losing by 10 runs, as Obed McCoy bowled a brilliant last over, giving only three runs.

Ngidi led the bowling charts with the figures of 4-39, while Fortuin, McCoy and Phehlukwayo picked one wicket each.
